Children of the Dump Puerto Vallarta Puerto Vallarta Children of the Dump

Fire Fly ProgramPuerto Vallarta Children of the Dump

With the local economy suffering tremendously, more and more adults were working in the dump during the evening and more and more children were hungry after dark.  Children of the Dump recognized this problem and began feeding the families who live in the shacks beside the dump and the adults working in the dump.  Every evening, 7 days a week from 8:30 to 11:00, our truck and volunteers feed about 600 men, women and children, including family members at the Regional Hospital who have traveled with their sick relatives to the hospital and stay with them until they are released.  Most are too poor to buy food locally and need help.

However, things got much worse in June when the city dump was officially closed.  The new dump is another 1½ hours further inland from the old dump.  The dump workers have not yet been allowed to work in the new dump so what meager income they had been making digging in the dump, has been eliminated.

It is not known when these workers will be allowed to work in the new dump, and how they will manage the 1½ hour trip.  But, they and the children are still hungry each evening so we will continue our program.”
